ACIDITY – LIFESTYLE DISORDER & HOMOEOPATHIC AGGRAVATION

 ABSTRACT

Acidity is a medical condition which is caused due excess production of acid. This acid is produced by the glands of the stomach. Hyperacidity is also called Acid Dyspepsia, which is one of the most common problem. Homoeopathy is a remarkable resource for those dealing with digestive disorders. This article provides an overview of the aetiology, diagnosis, and appropriate general & homoeopathic management of this disorder.

INTRODUCTION

Hyperacidity is a medical condition in which the stomach secretes a lot of acids. Dyspepsia, also known as indigestion or upset stomach, is a term that describes discomfort or pain in the upper abdomen. It is not a disease. Various conditions cause dyspepsia. It can be caused due to various medications, stressed lifestyle and spicy foods. The main symptom is usually pain or discomfort in the upper tummy (abdomen). In addition, other symptoms that may develop include Bloating, Belching, Quickly feeling full after eating, Feeling sick (nausea) & Being sick (vomiting).

Causes of Dyspepsia

Indigestion is usually related to lifestyle and what we eat and drink. It may also be caused by infection or some other digestive conditions.

Some common causes include:

· Life Style factors - Eating too much, Eating too rapidly, Consuming fatty or greasy foods, Consuming spicy foods, Consuming too much caffeine, Consuming too much alcohol, Consuming too much chocolate, Consuming too many fizzy drinks, Emotional trauma, moderate to intense exercise immediately after eating.

· Functional dyspepsia - a type of indigestion that may undermine the stomach's ability to accept and digest food and then pass that food on to the small intestine.

· Gallstones

· Gastritis (inflammation of the stomach)

· Hiatus hernia

· Infection, especially with bacteria known as Helicobacter pylori

· Nervousness

· Obesity - caused by more pressure inside the abdomen

· Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)

· Peptic ulcers

· Smoking

· Some medications like Antiinflammatory medicines are the most common culprits. These are medicines that many people take for arthritis, muscular pains, sprains, period pains, etc. For example: aspirin, ibuprofen, and diclofenac but there are others. Antiinflammatory medicines sometimes affect the lining of the stomach and allow acid to cause inflammation and ulcers.

· Various other medicines sometimes cause dyspepsia, or make dyspepsia worse. They include: digoxin, antibiotics, steroids, iron, calcium antagonists, nitrates, theophyllines and bisphosphonates.such as antibiotics and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)

· Stomach cancer

Clinical manifestations of Dyspepsia

Most people with indigestion feel pain and discomfort in the stomach or chest area. The sensation generally appears soon after consuming food or drink. In some cases symptoms may appear some time after a meal. Some people feel full during a meal, even if they have not eaten much. Heartburn and indigestion are two separate conditions.

Heartburn is a burning feeling behind the breastbone, usually after eating.

The Common symptoms are Nausea, Belching, Feeling bloated (very full)

In very rare cases indigestion may be a symptom of stomach cancer.

Mild indigestion is rarely anything to worry about. if symptoms continue for more than two weeks. Consult a physician immediately if pain is severe, and symptoms like

Loss of appetite or weight loss, Vomiting, Black stools, Jaundice (yellow coloring of eyes and skin), Chest pain, Shortness of breath, Sweating, Chest pain radiation to the jaw, arm or neck.

Investigations

Majority of patients indigestion is mild and does not occur very often. In such cases no treatment from a doctor is required. People who experience indigestion regularly consult a good physician.

Blood test - if the patient has any symptoms of anemia then blood test is needed.

Endoscopy - patients who have not responded to treatment, or those with certain signs and symptoms, may be advised to have their abdomen examined in more detail like endoscopy is advised.

Tests to diagnose Helicobacter pylori infection - this may include a urea breath test, a stool antigen test, and a blood test. Peptic ulcers are often cause by this bacterium.

Liver function test – if the patient may have a biliary condition, which affects the bile

ducts in the liver. This involves a blood test that determines how the liver is working.

X-rays - usually an upper-gastrointestinal and small bowel series. X-rays are taken of the esophagus, stomach and small intestine.

Abdominal ultrasound - high-frequency sound waves make images that show movement, structure and blood flow.

Abdominal CT (computed tomography) scan.

Management

Lifestyle changes

For all types of dyspepsia, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends the following lifestyle changes like Make sure you eat regular meals, Lose weight if you are obese, If you are a smoker, consider giving up, Don't drink too much alcohol.

Changing the way you eat may help your symptoms. Steps you can take include: Allow enough time for meals, Chew food carefully and completely, Avoid arguments during meals, Avoid excitement or exercise right after a meal, Relax and get rest if indigestion is caused by stress.

Posture - Lying down or bending forward a lot during the day encourages reflux. Sitting hunched or wearing tight belts may put extra pressure on the stomach, which may make any reflux worse.

Bedtime - If symptoms recur most nights, the following may help:

· Go to bed with an empty, dry stomach. To do this, don't eat in the last three hours before bedtime and don't drink in the last two hours before bedtime. If you are able, try raising the head of the bed by 10 – 20 cms (for example, with books or bricks under the bed's legs). This helps gravity to keep acid from refluxing into the oesophagus. If you do this, do not use additional pillows, because this may increase abdominal pressure.

· Spices and condiments such as pepper, mustard must be avoided.

· Vinegar or pickles, which make food more palatable and lead to overeating, must be avoided.

· Alcohol, tobacco, strong tea and coffee must be avoided. Highly seasoned meats, pulses, potato, rice, cheese, refined, processed, stale and tinned foods should all be avoided.

Home Remedies:

1. For instance, drinking a glass of water at the first sign of indigestion can give you much relief. Water helps dilute stomach acids thus giving you relief from bloating and burning.

2. Apple cider vinegar is often used to kick start a slow stomach and settle indigestion due to its antibiotic properties. Add one tablespoon apple cider vinegar to a cup of water. Mix in one teaspoon honey. Drink this solution two to three times a day for quick relief.

3. Fennel seeds can be really helpful for indigestion caused by very spicy or fatty food. Fennelseeds contain oil that can help reduce nausea and control flatulence.

4. Ginger stimulates digestive juices and the flow of enzymes that help you digest your food. This makes ginger an effective remedy for indigestion from overeating.

5. Baking soda - Indigestion often happens due to high levels of stomach acids. Baking soda is one of the most simple and effective treatments for indigestion because it acts like an antacid. Stir one half teaspoon of baking soda into half a glass of water. Drinking this solution will neutralize the acid in your stomach and give your relief from bloating.

6. Coriander is an effective spice to treat indigestion. Add some roasted coriander seeds to half a glass of buttermilk and drink it twice a day.

7. Drinking herbal tea after eating a heavy meal can greatly reduce indigestion. Dip your favorite herbal tea bag into a hot cup of water and cover it for five minutes. Drink it while it is still warm. You can try herbal tea containing mint, raspberry and blackberry for instant relief. Peppermint or chamomile tea can also calm your stomach, especially after overeating.

HOMOEOPATHIC MANAGEMENT

Homeopathic constitutional treatment based on the individual case is the most suitable and would aim to heal the underlying physical or emotional crisis causing digestive disorders. The unique physical, emotional and mental expression of illness is characteristic and is used to channel the course of Homoeopathic treatment. The remedies work by stimulating body’s natural ability to heal itself, acting as a catalyst for healing. Homoeopathy can be of assistance in retrieving normal motility and treating any psychological issues related to IBS.

Some Homoeopathic remedies for Dyspepsia are

Indicated Remedies

Indications

Arsenicum album

This remedy may be indicated if a person feels anxious, restless yet exhausted, and is worse from the smell and sight of food. Burning pain is felt in the stomach and esophagus, which often is relieved by warmth and sitting up. Vomiting and diarrhea are possible. Upsets from spoiled food or from eating too much fruit often respond to this remedy.

Bryonia

When this remedy is indicated, the stomach feels heavy, with rising acid and a bitter or sour taste. Pain and nausea are worse from motion of any kind. The person may have a dry mouth and be thirsty for long drinks, which may increase discomfort. Bryonia is strongly suggested if a person is grumpy and wants to stay completely still and not be touched or talked to.

Carbo vegetabilis

Sour belching bringing only small relief, burning pain in the stomach and abdomen, and flatulence after eating may be seen when this remedy is needed. The person feels cold and faint, with a strong desire for fresh or moving air. Digestion may be slow and incomplete, with nausea or cramping.

Colocynthis

Cutting, cramping pain in the stomach and abdomen, with relief from hard pressure or from doubling over, indicates a need for this remedy. A bitter taste in the mouth, a feeling that the intestines are about to burst, or a sensation that stones are grinding together in the abdomen may be present. Indigestion may be worse when the person feels upset, especially after suppressing anger.

Lycopodium

This remedy is indicated for many digestive troubles. The person’s appetite may be ravenous, but eating even a small amount can cause a feeling of fullness and bloating. Rumbling gas may form in the abdomen, pressing upward and making breathing difficult. The person often has a strong desire for sweets, is sleepy after meals, and feels worst in the late afternoon and evening.

Natrum carbonicum

This remedy can be helpful to mild people who have trouble digesting and assimilating many foods and have to stay on restricted diets. Indigestion, heartburn, and ulcers can occur if offending foods are eaten. Milk or dairy products can lead to flatulence or sputtery diarrhea that leaves an empty feeling in the stomach. Cravings for potatoes and sweets are common; also milk, but it makes these people sick, so they have usually learned to avoid it.

Natrum phosphoricum

A sour taste in the mouth, an acid or burning sensation in the stomach, sour vomiting, regurgitated bits of food, and a yellow coating on the tongue are all indications for this remedy. The person may have problems after consuming dairy products or too much sugar. Another indication for Natrum phos is a craving for fried eggs.

Nux vomica

This remedy is often useful for indigestion, and is especially suited to those who overindulge in stimulants, food, and alcohol. Chilliness, irritability, and sensitivity to odors, sound, and light are often seen. Pain and weight can be felt in the stomach, with cramps or constricting pains. The person often feels an urge to vomit or move the bowels (which may make the person feel better, but is rarely successful).

Phosphorus

Burning pain in the stomach that feels better from eating ice cream or other cold, refreshing foods suggests a need for this remedy. The person is usually thirsty for cold drinks, but often feels nauseous or vomits once liquids warm up in the stomach. People needing Phosphorus may have a tendency toward easy bleeding and sometimes develop stomach ulcers.

Pulsatilla

Indigestion that is worse from eating rich and fatty foods, with a feeling of a lump or pulsation in the stomach, suggests a need for this remedy. Discomfort often is worse from warmth, especially in a stuffy room, and the person may feel better from gentle walking in open air. A bitter taste in the mouth can take the pleasure out of eating. A person who needs Pulsatilla usually does not feel thirsty and may be tearful and emotional.

EYES – MIRROR OF BODY & MIND HOMOEOPATHIC EYE CARE

 INTRODUCTION

When we look at a person, what do we look at first? Obviously, eyes! Also when we speak to someone, we do not feel that the conversation is fruitful unless have good eye contact with that person. No wonder experts always give high priority to eyes when it comes to personal well-being. No one likes haggard, dull-looking eyes that reflect the internal ill-health. And therefore, one should take appropriate care of their eyes and enjoy various colours of life. Any serious trouble in connection with the eyes must always receive the most expert care and attention without any delay. There are, however, some eye conditions to which reference can be made here with advantage.

Homoeopathy is the holistic mode of treatment that treats the person as a whole and not merely his external manifestation. Therefore, when there is some problem with the eye (unless it is local injury problem), homeopathy believes that it is due to some internal malady that is reflecting through your eyes. Therefore, detailed history of patient is taken even if he has problem only pertaining to eyes.

EYE PROBLEMS THAT CAN BE DEALT EFFICIENTLY WITH HOMOEOPATHY:

Eye strain

This is a rather vague term and usually refers to a sore, tired sensation in the eyes, attributed rightly or wrongly to over – use. It is, of course, necessary to check the vision for any error of refraction which may need correction by glasses. There may be occupational causes related to the type of work engaged in, or the lighting of the room in which the work is carried out; and it may be possible to make adjustments in respect of such causes of strain.

Remedies which may help in this condition are

AGARICUS – letters seem to swim or above when reading, twitching in lids, eyeballs oscillate from side to side, may be double

CAUSTICUM – vision dim, film before eyes, desire to close eyes, lids feel heavy, eye muscle weak

GELSIMIUM – vision dim, eyeballs sore especially when moving them, eyelids droop, feels very heavy, possibly double vision

JABORANDI – eyes tire easily, sensation of heat and burning, indistinct vision, contracted pupils, white spots before eyes

NATRUM MUR – eyes give out while reading or sewing, letters or stitches run togrther, eyeballs feel too large, objects  appear ringed with fiery zig zags, hot tears stream down face when reading, lids feel gritty, spasmodic closure of lids

PHOSPHORUS – vision obscured by mist or veil, red mist or black spots before eyes, eyes tire easily on use, sees better by shading eyes with hand

RUTA – weakness of vision with blurring, eyes ache while in use, eyes feel hot and burning, especially in evening, eyes water, green halo seen round artificial light, spasm of lower lids

Black specks before the eyes

It is not at all an uncommon experience to notice small black specks or whirligigs apparently floating in front of the eyes. Moreover they change position readily with every movement of the eyes or head. They seem obvious some days and less noticeable at other times. These specks and spirals rejoice in the name of muscae volitantes and have been attributed to various causes without much confirmatory evidence. In any case they are of little significance and can be disregarded. If especially troublesome a few doses of AGARICUS, CHINA, NUXVOMICA or PHOSPHORUS, according to general indications, may afford relief

Bloodshot eye

Inflammations of the eye, whether superficial or deep, are accompanied by redness, often of a dusky hue, as well as by pain and distress. These call for treatment by an eye specialist. But occasionally, often without obvious cause, a flaming patch of red discoloration may be observed to one or other side of the pupils and iris. This is due to a haemorrhage beneath the conjunctiva and outside the actual eyeball. It is somewhat alarming in appearance but more unsightly than serious in significance

A few doses of ARNICA will speed recovery and allay any pain that may be present. If absorbtion of the blood is delayed LEDUM may be substituted for the ARNICA

Lachrymation

A watery or other discharge from the eye calls for expert attention, especially if severe or persistent. As an immediate measure pending fuller investigation, one or other of the following remedies may be given

ARSENICUM ALBUM – much burning in eye, discharge which is hot and excoriating, intense photophobia

ALLIUM CEPA – streaming eyes and nose, associated with much sneezing, discharge makes nose sore but not skin around eye

EUPHRASIA – eyes water all the time, discharge is burning and acrid, constant blinking

PULSATILLA – profuse yellow discharge, which does not excoriate the skin, worse in warm room, lids sore

For bathing the eye either EUPHRASIA or HYPERICUM can be used as lotion (two drops of mother tincture to the eye-bath of water)

Quivering Lids

Sometimes a sudden quivering or twitching is felt in one or other eyelid. This is a distressing sensation and seems to occur for no apparent reason. It usually passes off quite quickly and is not a cause for alarm. Various remedies recommended for this condition, among them AGARICUS, BELLADONA, CALC CARB, CICUTA are very useful

Styes

Recurrent styes on the eyelids will call for careful assessment on constitutional lines by a physician. Various remedies may have to be considered but in many cases GRAPHITIS, PULSATILLA or SULPHUR will give relief, as a local application a compress of HYPERICUM lotion (ten drops of mother tincture to the half pint of water) should be helpful.

Eye Injuries

Eyes must be treated with even more respect than ears. The most expert and skilled attention is called for in almost any type of eye injury. As a temporary measure a moist pad of HYPERICUM lotion (ten drops of mother tincture to the half pint of cold water) may be placed over the eye and ARNICA 200 administered. If there is much pain this can be followed by HYPERICUM 6 in hourly doses till relief is obtained. An alternative remedy is ACONITE, which has been called the Arnica of the eye, give a few doses in 30 potencies

If the pain is felt in the eyeball SYMPHYTUM 6, PHYTOLACCA 6 or COLOCYNTHIS 6 may be given. Pain persisting for a long time after the injury may yield to ARNICA 30, twice daily for a few days. If there ia a speck of dust or other foreign bodies in the eye it should be bathed in HYPERICUM lotion (two drops of mother tincture to the eye-bath of water). If after this the object is still felt to be present the lids may be everted and if the speck is visible an attempt should be made to wipe it off with a wisp of soft hand kerchief dipped in the HYPERICUM lotion. If the object is firmly embedded and cannot be easily wiped off, expert aid must be sought without delay. For persisting pain or discomfort after removal of the object, the eye should be bathed with EUPHRASIA lotion (two drops of mother tincture to the eye-bath of water) and EUPHRASIA 6 given internally. A very useful fluid for the use as an eye-wash is an infusion of tea leaves, warm or cold as preferred

In the black eye the damage is mostly around the orbit and the pain and discoloration and swelling cause both distress and disfigurement. ARNICA 30 should be given hourly upto five or six doses, or, if the relief is obtained by cool applications, LEDUM 30. Further treatment may be with ARNICA 6 or, if the eye is painful then HYPERICUM 6

A pair of lovely black eyes, unless separately administered, may indicate a fracture of the base of the skull and immediate steps must be taken to obtain expert advice. ARNICA should of course be given a dose or two of 200, and 30 or 6 to follow.

For quick control of bleeding in a cut eye apply firm pressure with a pad soaked in equal parts of CALENDULA tincture and cold water.

Glaucoma

Common form of glaucoma is associated with an increase in the fluid pressure inside the eye. This pressure may cause damage to the optic nerve and Vision loss may result.

GELSEMIUM (gels) - Eye signs are eyelids heavy, glaucoma and descemetitis, dim-sighted, pupils dilated and unaware of light, orbital neuralgia, detached retina, hysterical amblyopia. General signs are motor paralysis, dizziness, drowsiness, dullness, and trembling, muscular weakness. Mind signs are dullness, languor, listless, apathy about his illness. Head signs are vertigo, pain in the temple, extending into the ear.

PHYSOSTIGMA (physost) - Eye signs are glaucoma, night blindness, photophobia, contraction of pupils, twitching of ocular muscles, partial blindness, paresis of accommodation, astigmatism, a spasm of ciliary muscle, with irritability after using eyes, increasing myopia. General signs are spinal irritation; head cannot bear to raise eyelids. Mouth signs are tongue feels sore on the tip. Heart signs are fluttering of heartfelt in the throat.

RUTA GRAVEOLENS (ruta) - Eye signs are pressure deep in orbits, pressure over eyebrow, eyestrain followed by headache, disturbances of accommodation, weary pain while reading, and asthenopia. General signs are flexor tendons; all parts of the body are painful, as if bruised, feeling of intense weakness, weakness, and despair.

SPIGELIA (spig) - Eye signs feel too large pressive pain on turning them; Pupils dilated, photophobia, rheumatic ophthalmia, severe pain in and around eyes, extending deep into the socket. Neurological signs are ciliary neuralgia, a true neuritis.General signs are touch sensitive; parts feel chilly, send a shudder through a frame.

CATARACT         Any opacity that may occur in the lens or its capsule or both is called cataract. It is one of the commonest forms of interference with vision generally with the advancement of age.some important homoeopathic remedy for cataract are Calcarea fluorica; Calcarea phosphorica; Causticum; Cineraria; Conium maculatum; Fluoricum acidum; Magnesium carbonicum; Natrium muriaticum; Nux vomica; Phosphorus; Santoninum; Silicea.

Mother tinctures effective for eye affections are as follows

EUPHRASIA Q – it is very effective in acute eye affections, traumatic conjunctivitis, blepharitis and corneal ulceration with acrid discharges

ZINCUM SULPH Q – very useful for corneal opacities

ARGENTUM NITRICUM – useful for purulent Ophthalmia, pus is thick, yellow and bland worse in warm room or fire better in open air

CINERARIA MARITIMA Q - it is very effective in cataract one drop 4-5 times a day should be instilled in the eyes for several months. It also useful in corneal opacities after trauma

DETOXIFIER - LIVER CARE WITH HOMOEOPATHIC MODALITY

 ABSTRACT

The liver is the largest gland in the body situated below the diaphragm, on the right side of the abdomen and has many vital functions to perform for the body. It filters the blood coming from the digestive tract before it passes to the body. Other important functions of the liver are metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and amino acids in the body; production of bile that help in breaking down the fat and detoxification of chemicals and drugs. Its other functions include producing blood clotting factors, storage of glucose and clearance of bilirubin. In this article we discuss about the major factor that affects the normal functioning of liver - Alcoholic liver disease.

INTRODUCTION

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a term that encompasses the liver manifestations of alcohol overconsumption, including fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis, and chronic hepatitis with liver fibrosis or cirrhosis.  Many factors can cause liver problems, but the major among them are virus infections, alcohol consumption and obesity.

ALD is one of the major medical complications of alcohol abuse. Alcohol is the major cause of liver cirrhosis in all over world. Alcohol accounts for 80% of all liver cirrhosis cases seen in district general hospitals. Alcoholic cirrhosis is increasingly seen in countries such as Japan and India which traditionally had a low prevalence of the disease.

AETIOLOGY

Alcohol abuse over the years leads to the replacement of healthy liver tissue with scar tissue. Considered as one of the biggest reasons for acute liver damage, alcohol is not only life-threatening but can also cause liver failure. Excessive consumption of alcohol can result in scarring of the liver and can cause ALD (alcohol-related diseases). Over time, scarring and cirrhosis can occur. Cirrhosis is the final phase of alcoholic liver disease.

RISK FACTORS

Lifetime intake of alcohol - Alcoholic liver disease does not occur in all heavy drinkers. The chances of getting liver disease go up the longer you have been drinking and more alcohol you consume. You do not have to get drunk for the disease to happen. The disease is common in people between 40 and 50 years of age. Men are more likely to have this problem. However, women may develop the disease after less exposure to alcohol than men.

Drinking pattern - The pattern of drinking was also important as ALD is increased in those who drink without accompanying food and also in those who drink multiple different alcoholic beverages. It is well known that food delays gastric emptying and intestinal absorption of alcohol and thus intake of food before drinking will decrease the rise of blood alcohol concentrations. The absorption of alcohol is lower when consuming low concentration beverages such as beer compared with high concentration spirits.

Genetic factors - Some people may have an inherited risk for the disease.

Stages of Alcoholic fatty liver disease

ALD occurs in three stages viz.

· Fatty Liver (steatosis)

· Alcoholic Hepatitis,

· Liver Cirrhosis.

At least 80% of heavy drinkers develop steatosis, 10%–35% develop alcoholic hepatitis, and approximately 10% will develop cirrhosis

Fatty Liver – It is the first stage of ALD, and is also known as steatosis. Fatty Liver is a highly prevalent liver disease, which is characterized by an excessive accumulation of fat inside the liver cells. It makes it hard for the liver to function properly. Heavy drinkers usually get to the fatty liver stage in their early years of alcohol abuse. This reversible if alcohol use is stopped. Mild Fatty liver is usually asymptomatic. It is detected incidentally during routine tests performed. However, some persons can have symptoms which are often vague like Malaise , Fatigue - even with moderate exertion, Fullness and heaviness in the abdomen, more in the right upper corner, Occasionally the liver maybe painful on pressure.

Alcoholic Hepatitis – The second stage of ALD, Alcoholic Hepatitis is characterized by the inflammation of the liver leading to the degeneration of liver cells quickly. This stage might last for some years but will eventually progress to absolute liver damage if the patient continues to drink. In critical cases, it can lead to life-threatening complications like liver cirrhosis and absolute liver damage. Jaundice is the most common symptom in this stage along with Nausea, Vomiting, Loss of appetite, Abdominal tenderness, Fatigue and weakness, Weight loss.

Liver Cirrhosis – Liver cirrhosis is the last and final stage of Alcoholic Liver Disease where permanent scarring of healthy liver tissue occurs. It is a severe condition and an irreversible one. A patient with liver cirrhosis will witness liver failure symptoms, along with the symptoms of alcoholic hepatitis like Fluid accumulation in the abdomen, Spleen enlargement, Bleeding from veins, Confusion

Clinical presentations

Early symptoms - these are often quite vague, such as  abdominal (tummy) pain, loss of appetite, fatigue, feeling sick, diarrhoea, feeling generally unwell

Advanced symptoms -  As the liver becomes more severely damaged, more obvious and serious symptoms can develop, such as  yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice), swelling in the legs, ankles and feet caused by a build-up of fluid (oedema), swelling in abdomen caused by a build-up of fluid known as ascites, a high temperature (fever) and shivering attacks, very itchy skin, hair loss, unusually curved fingertips and nails (clubbed fingers), blotchy red palms, significant weight loss, weakness and muscle wasting, confusion and memory problems, trouble sleeping (insomnia) and changes in your personality caused by a build-up of toxins in the brain, passing black, tarry poo and vomiting blood as a result of internal bleeding, a tendency to bleed and bruise more easily, such as frequent nosebleeds and bleeding gums, increased sensitivity to alcohol and drugs because the liver can't process them

Diagnosis

Alcohol liver disease (ALD) is often first suspected when tests for other medical conditions show a damaged liver.

This is because the condition causes few obvious symptoms in the early stages.

Blood tests used to assess the liver are known as liver function tests. But liver function tests can be normal at many stages of liver disease. Blood tests can also detect if you have low levels of certain substances, such as a protein called serum albumin, which is made by the liver. A low level of serum albumin suggests your liver isn't functioning properly. A blood test may also look for signs of abnormal blood clotting, which can indicate significant liver damage.

Other test in later or advanced stages of ALD are ultrasound scan, CT scan, MRI, Liver biopsy, endoscopy etc.,

Tips for preventing and treating alcoholic liver disease

Withdrawal

Complete abstinence from alcohol is the most important therapeutic intervention for people with Alcoholic Liver Disease. Abstinence from alcohol reduces the risk of further damage to the liver, but it also provides it with a chance to recover. Patients suffering from ALD should completely refrain from drinking, thereby improving the outcome & histological features of hepatic injury. They should give their body a chance to reduce portal pressure and decrease progression to cirrhosis. It eventually helps to improve survival at all ALD stages.

Nutritional Therapy

One of the major complications of ALD is malnutrition, especially in patients who are on the second stage of alcoholic hepatitis. In patients with ALD, protein-calorie malnutrition is highly prevalent.

Natural Treatment

Certain natural remedies may be helpful in healing fatty liver when part of a personalized and well-rounded treatment plan. Before taking natural remedies, consult with medical doctor as well as a nutritionally and botanically trained health care professional.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, meaning it protects against free radical damage. This can be especially helpful for the liver because free radicals form during the natural detoxification process. Vitamin E also supports the immune system and can help prevent fibrosis and cirrhosis, which are common complications of long-term fatty liver.

Turmeric is popular both as a culinary spice and for its medical properties. Turmeric, also known as Curcuma longa, is used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine to treat liver ailments, digestive problems and skin diseases. Turmeric has a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It protects liver cells against damage and reduces inflammation that results from fatty liver. Turmeric may be sprinkled on food as a spice or taken as a tincture or capsule.

Milk thistle is a well-known all-natural solution for the treatment of liver disorders. The active component perfectly located at the seed will be the phytochemical silymarin. Silymarin is often a flavonoid which helps bring about regeneration regarding harmed hard working liver tissue and also improves liver organ purpose.

Omega-3 essential fatty acids are located naturally within flax plant seeds, seed natural skin oils like flaxseed along with canola oils, bass oils as well as chilly water seafood like fish. Omega-3 essential fatty acids can have outstanding hard working liver health improvements, enhance the action involving insulin, as well as aid many individuals who are suffering through junk lean meats condition. In addition, Omega-3 fat lower swelling and pain some of those who are experiencing any junk liver condition.

HOMOEOPATHIC MANAGEMENT

Homeopathy is one of the most popular holistic systems of medicine. The selection of remedy is based upon the theory of individualization and symptoms similarity by using holistic approach. This is the only way through which a state of complete health can be regained by removing all the sign and symptoms from which the patient is suffering. The aim of homeopathy is not only to treat fatty liver symptoms but to address its underlying cause and individual susceptibility. As far as therapeutic medication is concerned, several remedies are available to treat fatty liver symptoms that can be selected on the basis of cause, sensations and modalities of the complaints.  For individualized remedy selection and treatment, the patient should consult a qualified homeopathic doctor in person. There are following remedies which are helpful in the treatment of fatty liver symptoms:

Arsenic Album, Nux Vomica, Chelidonium, Cardus m, Apocynum, Lycopodium, Sepia, Phosphorous, Digitalis, Bryonia, Helleborus Niger, Ferrum Met, kali Carb, Iris V, Natrum Carb and many other medicines.

Indicated Remedies

Indications

Bryonia

When there are stitching pains in the right hypochondriac region, Bryonia is the first remedy to be thought of, though for these pains we have other remedies, such as Chelidonium and Kali carbonicum. Under Bryonia the liver is swollen, congested and inflamed; the pains in the hypochondriac region are worse from any motion, and better from lying on the right side, which lessens the motion of the parts when breathing. It is one of the chief remedies for jaundice brought on by a fit of anger.

Mercurius

This remedy has much sensitiveness and dull pain in the region of the liver; the patient cannot lie on the right side. The liver is enlarged. The skin and conjunctiva are jaundiced. The stools are either clay-colored from absence of bile, or yellowish-green bilious stools passed with a great deal of tenesmus. There is a yellowish white coated tongue which takes the imprint of the teeth and there is a foetid breath, loss of appetite and depression of spirits.

Podophyllum

The principal use of Podophyllum is in liver affections. Primarily, it induces a large flow of bile, and, secondarily, great torpidity, followed by jaundice. It is indicated in torpid or chronically congested liver, when diarrhea is present. The liver is swollen and sensitive, the face and eyes are yellow and there is a bad taste in the mouth. The tongue is coated white or yellow and the bile may form gall stones.

Chelidonium

The liver symptoms of Chelidonium are very prominent. There is soreness and stitching pains in the region of the liver, but the keynote for this drug in hepatic diseases is a pain under the angle of the right shoulder blade, which may extend to the chest, stomach, or hypochondrium; there is swelling of the liver, chilliness, fever, jaundice, yellow coated tongue, bitter taste and a craving for acids and sour things, such as pickles and vinegar.

Digitalis

When jaundice arises from cardiac diseases, Digitalis may be the remedy. There is no retention of bile, nor obstruction of the ducts, but the jaundice is due to the fact that the liver does not take from the blood the elements which go to form bile. There is present drowsiness, bitter taste, soreness , enlargement and bruised feeling in the region of the liver.

Myrica cerifera

Myrica is an important liver remedy. There is first despondency and also jaundice due to imperfect formation of bile in the liver, and not to any obstruction, comparing here with Digitalis. There is dull headache, worse in the morning, the eyes have a dingy, dirty, yellowish hue, the tongue is coated yellow.

Nux vomica

In liver affections occurring in those who have indulged to excess in alcoholic liquors, highly seasoned food, quinine, or in those who have abused themselves with purgatives, Nux is the first remedy to be thought of. The liver is swollen hard and sensitive to the touch and pressure of clothing is uncomfortable. The first remedy in cirrhosis of the liver. Colic may be present.

Lycopodium

Lycopodium acts powerfully on the liver. The region of the liver is sensitive to the touch, and there is a feeling of tension in it, a feeling as if a cord were tied about the waist. Cirrhosis. The pains are dull and aching instead of sharp and lancinating, as under Chelidonium. Fulness in the stomach after eating a small quantity.

Carduus marianus

This remedy is indicated in jaundice with dull headache, bitter taste, white tongue with red edges, nausea and vomiting of a greenish fluid. There is an uncomfortable fullness in the region of the liver, the stools are bilious and the urine golden yellow; there is sensitiveness in the epigastrium and right hypochondrium. Burnett regards a dark brownish patch over the lower part of the sternum as a useful hint for Carduus, and in such cases he observes that both the liver and heart are at fault. The presence of "liver spots seems to be a special indication for the remedy.

Sulphur

Sulphur is suitable to chronic affections of the liver; it increases the flow of bile and there is much pain and soreness in the liver. Sulphur often completes the cure commenced by Nux. Liver complaints from abuse of mercury will oftentimes call for Sulphur. If the stools are colorless and if much jaundice or ascites be present Sulphur is contra-indicated. Lachesis, however, has jaundice, as do all snake poisons, and is useful in the enlarged livers of drunkards, with tenderness on pressure and throbbing in the right side.

Phosphorus

Phosphorus is homoeopathic to fatty degeneration of the liver, with well marked soreness and jaundice. The stools are grayish white. Cirrhosis and atrophy may also call for Phosphorus. The jaundice is indicative of organic diseases, and the remedy is a useful one in malignant diseases of the liver. Digitalis has also been recommended in acute yellow atrophy. Jaundice accompanying pneumonia may also call for Phosphorus.

Taraxacum

This is a decided liver remedy, and the indications are a mapped tongue and a bitter taste in the mouth, chilliness after eating, pain and soreness in the region of the liver and bilious diarrhoea. Kali bichromicum also has a mapped tongue. Yucca filamentosa has a pain going from the upper region of the liver to the back and a bad taste in the mouth. The stools are loose and bilious, accompanied with much flatus.

CONCLUSION

Homoeopathy treats the person as a whole. It means that homoeopathic treatment focuses on the patient as a person, as well as his pathological condition. The homoeopathic medicines are selected after a full individualizing examination and case-analysis, which includes the medical history of the patient, physical and mental constitution etc. A miasmatic tendency (predisposition/susceptibility) is also often taken into account for the treatment of chronic conditions.
